I recently built investmentregulation.ca over three weeks. It’s a free, open-source course designed to help people prepare for the exam required to work in Canadian investment sales.

The official material is spread across three PDFs and can have a pretty steep learning curve, so I rebuilt the course from the ground up. It starts with the basics, beginning with “What Is Investing?”, and works through 69 lessons, along with flashcards and a full mock exam. The goal is to make the material easier to understand, easier to remember, and much faster to work through.

Try it out and let me know what you think.

The CIRE is the exam you need to pass to move up in financial sales in Canada. I'm taking it, and the material you're given to study from is three PDF documents that list what you're expected to know without ever explaining any of it.

So I wrote a course that starts at "what is investing" and gets you to the exam. Along the way there are flashcards that come back more often when you get them wrong, a drill mode with no timer, a timed round, and a full mock exam you can review afterwards.

Nothing you do on it gets sent anywhere. Your progress is saved in your own browser, there's no account, and there's nothing to pay.

A memory game called Synapse

Board, tiles, two players, no screen

One person lays out a pattern of shapes on a board. The other person looks at it, the board gets covered, and they try to put it back the same way. You score on how close you got, not how fast you were.

I made the board and the tiles by hand. The hard part was working out how many shapes to use, too few and nobody gets it wrong, too many and nobody gets it right.

A crane that picks things up with a magnet

itsdanielsultan.github.io/Physics-Website

If you wrap wire around a piece of metal and run electricity through it, the metal turns into a magnet. Turn the electricity off and whatever it was holding drops. I built a small crane that works this way.

Then I changed one thing at a time, more wire, more electricity, a different metal in the middle, and wrote down what each change did. The whole thing is a webpage instead of a folder in my room.

A shortcut between two apps I use

github.com/raycast/extensions/pull/25100

Raycast lets you run things on a Mac by typing instead of clicking. Craft is where I keep my notes. There was no way to send a task from one to the other without stopping and switching apps, so I wrote the piece of software that does it.

I offered it to Raycast to include in their app. They didn't take it. It works, and anyone can read the code.

Shortcuts for the apps I use most

github.com/itsdanielsultan/pieoneer

You hold down a key and a wheel of options appears around your cursor. I put together a set for the Mac apps I'm in every day and put it online. Fourteen people I've never met have saved it.
